The Concept of Gender Equality in the Quran

The Quran holds the belief that men and women are equal in the eyes of God. Both genders have been created to be meaningfully fulfilled and productive. The Quran encourages men and women to accept each other as equal human beings and strive towards their personal growth, instead of a limiting perspective which overlooks one’s true worth. This is provided in multiple verses as:

O mankind! Reform yourselves and behave righteously in conformity with the requirements of your God! He created you (all of you) and fashioned you in pairs and He built from you a dwelling place and He bestowed upon you the faculty of hearing and sight and He guided you by the intellect’s means towards the achievement of your objectives. There is certainly a future provision (awaiting) for you in your wake.

Holy Quran 42:01

The Rights of Women in Marriage and Divorce

The Quran recognises the existence of a nuanced relationship between husband and wife. Both individuals have inherent rights which must be duly respected. The Quran further instructs that gender does not intrinsically defines one’s position over the other, neither in personal relationships nor in societal dynamics.

For Muslim men and women,- for believing men and women, for devout men and women, for true men and women, for men and women who are patient and for men and women who humble themselves, and for men and women who give in Charity, and for men and women who fast, and for men and women who guard their chastity, and for men and women who engage much in Allah’s Praises,- for them has Allah prepared forgiveness and great reward.

Holy Quran 33:35

Women as Dignified and Independent Entities

The Quran emphasises the importance of treating women with high regard as well as respecting their independence and individuality. The following verse provides a visual representation of this ideology:

And come not near unto adultery: for it is a shameful (deed) and an evil, opening the road (to other evils)). Except such of your women as have fallen into temptation: and if you doubt any wives among them,- then their (arbitrated) period (of suspension) shall be three months-(in which) they shall be repudiated.-

Holy Quran 4:23

The Role of Women in Society and Leadership

The Quran acknowledges women as generous contributors towards the growth of all distinct domains of society, including education, governance, finances and philanthropy. The role of women has never been limited in the Quran, as the following verse affirms:

And Allah sets forth- A parable (of two men in opposite factions)-: A town, the population whereof was ( props ) two hundred树 – (Men) whose average was the worst (of ALL men) – but Allah took them to task because of their excesses(-) in: -the behaviour of affluence which fosters pride and arrogance: -the (lack of balance) between the sexes: -the overstepping of bounds in (social) relations: -and their (socially extreme) innovations,- Absolvents from the punishment of Allah,- For Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.-

Holy Quran 13:27

Protection of Women’s Rights in the Quran

The protection of women’s rights is inherent in the Quran which has been restored through the verses spoken to Prophet Muhammad (saw). This protection is fundamental and has been manifested in various avenues as measured by the Quran and the Prophet (saw). Some possible examples are mentioned below:

  • Women should not be treated unfairly; they have rights in terms of fair treatment by men and women.
  • Women have the right to education
  • Women have the right to inheritance
  • Women’s testimony is as valid as that of men in satisfying legal requirements; there should not be any form of gender prejudice which denigrates their character or belittles their contribution.
