Understanding the Importance of Parental Respect

In Islam, showing respect to parents is one of the most significant acts of worship. It is considered as a precondition for leading a successful life both spiritually and propagationally. The Holy Quran emphasizes the importance of respect for parents by using various forms of expression which seems necessary for a human being. The application of this injunction is so important that it has been emphasized in different Surahs and Ayats of the Holy Quran.

Roles and Responsibilities of Parents in Islam

The Holy Quran and Sunnah have designated certain innate duties and responsibilities for parents towards their children. These include:

    • Love and Affection:

The Holy Quran instructs parents to love and care for their children (Surah Ale-Imran, 3:133).

    • Providing Essential Needs:

Allah has ordered parents to provide essential needs for their children (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:233).

    • Education:

The Holy Prophet (saw) has emphasized the importance of educating children (hadith, Al-Bukhari).

    • Guidance:

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said, “Command your children to pray when they become seven-year-olds. (Bukhari)

Parental Love and Care

The love and care that children get from their parents in childhood remains etched in their hearts for the rest of their lives. Islam encourages disciple and obedience by children because it helps them understand the values of family and respect for others. Parental love and care help children develop a strong personality and a good sense of individuals responsibility. Childhood experiences provide the foundation for their adult life. The value of the family unit propels individuals into responsible and valuable members of society.

Traditional Values and Cultural Heritage

Traditional values and cultural heritage have a great significance in the context of parental respect. Islamic teachings underline special values to be transmitted from generation to generation. In Muslim societies, these values are maintained through education, customs, beliefs, and religious practice. Parents have a great role to play as the first educators for children. Their role goes beyond guidance and inculcation of religious values but also involves nurturing of cultural heritage and traditional values.

Examples of Prophetic Teachings on Parental Respect

Example 1: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Paradise lies at the feet of your mother. So, if you want to enter paradise Go and become the dust of the feet of your mother.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

Example 2: Similarly, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Anyone who has three children of whom two die, and he keeps the third one, will enter Paradise.” (Bukhari & Muslim). This Hadith signifies that, by caring for their children and especially by burying them, the parents will become worthy of the highest award in Paradise.

Example 3: The Prophet of Islam (PBUH) also said, “He who believes in Allah and the Last Day, should honor his guest, maintain good family relationships, and speak good or remain silent.” (Bukhari)
