Understanding Humility and Gratitude in the Quran

In the holy Quran, Allah (SWT) emphasizes the values of humility and gratitude, highlighting their importance in our daily lives. Humility, commonly known as ‘Tawakkul’, is not just an act of showing respect to others but rather a state of mind, where an individual acknowledges and relies on Allah (SWT)’s infinite power and mercy. Gratitude, also known as ‘Shukr’, reflects in thanking Allah (SWT) for His blessings and reacting positively towards His many favors.

The Role of Humility in Islam

In Islam, humility plays a significant role in one’s spiritual and social development. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) once said, “Humility is a part of faith”. Humility is essential in our day-to-day interactions with others, reflecting our faith in Allah (SWT) and our knowledge of our own limitations. It helps us remain grounded, avoiding arrogance and haughtiness. Humility helps us treat others with respect and kindness, which reflects on our personality significantly.

The Importance of Gratitude in Islam

Gratitude in Islam is an integral part of being thankful to Allah (SWT) for His blessings. Gratitude helps us appreciate Allah (SWT)’s favors upon us, fostering a positive outlook in life. Gratitude manifests in various ways, including offering promptly after receiving blessings, acknowledging Allah (SWT)’s involvement at all times, as well as being grateful for small favors.

Examples from the Quran highlighting Humility and Gratitude

The holy Quran contains many verses and stories that demonstrate and communicate the values of humility and gratitude. Here are some examples:

“And whosoever does a wrong, wrong comes to him, and whosoever does a symbol of Allah and His apostles, He will admit him by a good admission and will prepare for him a place in the Garden (of Bliss).”> (17:46) This verse emphasizes the importance of following Allah’s (SWT) commands through the practice of humility and gratitude.

“And be they rich or poor, Allah is able to grant to each abundantly. No soul discerneth what is kept hid for them of comfort from Allah.” (17:20) The mentioned verse underscores the concept of trusting and relying on Allah (SWT) by being thankful for both abundance and scarcity.
