In Islam, fairness is a fundamental value that is regarded as a gateway to piety, success, and prosperity in trade and commerce (Al-Baqarah: 275). Consequently, being fair in business activities ensures that one’s Islamic values are sustained, and his overall spirit of God-consciousness is preserved.
Observing Trust and Confidence in Business Transactions
One of the critical values that embody the Quranic ethics of business is the observance of trust and confidence during non-metal business transactions. Trust is pivotal in forming a strong business bond as it fosters longevity and productivity all through the business association. Mutual trust and confidence can be demonstrated in various ways, including honoring previous business deals, safeguarding sensitive information, and avoiding any deception, fraud, or treachery.
The Use of Honesty and Transparency in Business Deals
Allah has not only enjoined fairness and trust but also honesty and transparency in business activities. On the Quranic ethics of business, it is unlawful to adulterate the products one offers for sale, set unfair prices or rates, lie or mislead about the nature and/or quality of the products, or conceal any significant fact. In other words, business dealings should be done openly and truthfully, permitting customers or clients to know what they are purchasing and at what price.
The Need for Just and Equitable Business Practices
Another vital Quranic ethic in business is justice and equity in business transactions. Businesses that operate with justice and equality do not cheat, deceive, or exploit their customers, staff, or partners but instead charge fair prices, pay fair wages, and offer employees relevant benefits (An-Nahl: 126). Similarly, the company should apply the same principle in deals with third parties. In actuality, this ensures a level playing field in the company, which enhances overall trust and sustainability.
Importance of Respecting Rights and Duties in Business Relationships
The significance of rights and duties in business relationships is central to Islamic ethics in business. As Quranic morality demands mutual respect and responsibility, vendors, clients, employers, and staffs should reciprocate their rights and avoid infringement. In fact, the Quran considers exploiting or hurting another individual’s rights as a significant sin. Therefore, in the world of business, crossing any legal boundaries should be shunned and substituted with mutual respect for the rights and duties of parties involved.
