In a world that is plagued by prejudice, race plays a significant role in shaping people’s perceptions and attitudes towards others. Unfortunately, this continues to cause divisions and hate, which in turn leads to conflicts and socio-political instability. While some argue that these issues are deeply rooted, the Quran has presented approaches to help individuals overcome such prejudices and cultivate a sense of unity and brotherhood.
Before we discuss how the Quran help individuals overcome prejudice, it’s essential first to understand what prejudice is. Prejudice is a negative judgment or opinion about someone or something based solely on probability or stereotype, and it often leads to hateful behaviors or actions. Prejudice is not innate in humans but is rather learned through socialization, parental influences, and societal norms and values.
The Quranic Teachings
The Quran provides insights into understanding and dealing with prejudice. One of the principle teachings in the Quran is that of equality and brotherhood, where all human beings are considered equals in the eyes of Allah due to their shared humanity. Additionally, the Quran contains teachings that promote understanding, empathy, and kindness towards individuals from other races.
Brotherhood: The Quran states that “O humankind! Be mindful of your Lord who created you from a single soul and created, of like nature, its mate and dispersed them and placed beneath them garments of luxury and sheer wool” (Quran 7:189). This verse highlights that human beings are created from a single soul (Adam) and subsequently, the importance of brotherhood and unity among human beings.
Compassion and Empathy: The Quran also encourages individuals to show compassion and empathy towards those from other races. For instance, the Quran commands Muslims to “Worship Allah and join none with Him in worship; and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, the poor, the near of kin, the stranger (yerus), and the (captive) declaring (them) free” (Quran 4:36). This verse emphasizes the importance of treating others, including strangers (yerus) with love and kindness.
Practicing Quranic Methods
Practicing the Quranic teachings can assist in overcoming prejudice. Here are a few practices that can significantly help:
- Love and Respect: The Quran encourages believers to love and respect one another. As Muhammad stated, “The believers are like a structure, each part supporting the other.” The more we love and respect others, the less likely we are to hold prejudices against them.
- Empathy and Understanding: The Quran asks Muslims to learn about other faiths and cultures to promote understanding and empathy:
- Serving others (Charity): The Quran imparts the importance of serving people of all races by stating “Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has faith, verily to him will We raise him to ranks high” (Quran 16:97). This encouragement encompasses different faiths and inclinations towards individuals of all races.
The Quranic Teachings, including brotherhood, compassion, respect, empathy, and understanding, present methods to help individuals overcome prejudice. The Quran offers valuable insights that promote social cohesion and unity amongst people, irrespective of race or faith.
